#ElectBroadly Newsletter (10.30.19)
Government is at its best when it is truly representative of its people; this means having balanced gender representation as well as ethnic and racial representation in our government. As citizens who have the ability to participate in this democracy, we have significant power to affect this representation. This isn’t identity politics; this is democracy. A truly representative government is a pillar of democracy.
Through 2020, genEquality is running an #ElectBroadly Civic Engagement Initiative focused on promoting civic engagement, democratic values, and voter turnout that is informed by the genEquality worldview. Thanks to the rising number of women and people of color running for elected office at all levels of government, we have the opportunity to strengthen our democracy while changing the faces of our government.
In our quest to spur ever-greater civic engagement, we held our first #ElectBroadly voter registration party in partnership with Harry's two weeks ago. Within the span of a week, 150+ members of the Harry's HQ team wrote 700+ personal letters to unregistered potential voters in PA, VA, and WI!
Encouraging unregistered voters - many of whom are members of under-represented groups - to register and vote is one of the best ways to ensure we as a community are able to #ElectBroadly.
An #ElectBroadly letter-writing event is an easy lift for anyone looking to increase civic engagement in their school, workplace, or community. You provide the space, snacks, music, and people, and we provide all the letter-writing materials, postage, and voter registration forms! If you're interested, please email us at ElectBroadly@genEquality.org, and we'll start planning your #ElectBroadly event.
