#EqualWorkEqualPay (01.15.20)
We are nearly through with this cycle of all ten genEquality activations. Our very last (but certainly not least!) activation to highlight before we begin anew next week is #EqualWorkEqualPay.
2019 was a big year for efforts toward equal pay! It quickly became a prominent issue for the Democratic presidential candidates as the debates began earlier in the year; employers with more than 100 workers must now submit pay data broken down by race and gender to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission; and of course, the U.S. Women's National Soccer Team began their epic fight for #EqualPlayEqualPay.
While significant progress was made, as always, we still have work to do. Of the 890 largest companies in the United States, still only a fraction have made their gender pay gap reports public. Equal Pay Day last year was April 2, 2019, with women of color even further behind; Latina women's Equal Pay Day did not occur until November 20, 2019 - only 53 cents on the dollar earned.
Fundamentally, if two people are doing work of equal value, they should receive equal pay for that work. We have to do better, and speak up for ourselves and others around us. Let's push forward for a stronger and more equal 2020!
